WORKING WITH EDITORS

Working with editors is certainly a delight and new experience for a motion designer like me. The turnaround is faster and there is a lot of creative freedom. The editors often give me “temporary graphics” for timing, layout and duration. My job is to instantaneously understand the vibe of the video edit and craft a motion piece to communicate the segments in their cut.

The still images below are from temporary graphics, and the GIFs are demonstrations of how I translate them to a higher level.

EXPLORATORY ANIMATIONS

Working with TCM, I have to work with type animations 80% of the time. My process is to first do “motion sketches” of type animations and see what type of variations I can come up with. My motto is “Fail faster, and fail harder”. I need to get out whatever I have in mind before settling on an animation. All these animations were done in After Effects using the text animators and a mix of range, wiggle, and expression selectors.
